You marked a clean momentum crossover on Tuesday, took the trade, and by Thursday the crossover had drifted a candle to the left as if it had always been there. That quiet shift is the difference between a tool you can trade and one that only looks good in hindsight, and it is exactly the kind of thing the KST is either honest or dishonest about.

What is the KST indicator, and why four speeds?

The KST measures momentum by taking four rate-of-change readings over different lookbacks, smoothing each, weighting the slower ones more heavily, and adding them into a single line. Rate of change is simply how far price has moved, in percent, over a set number of candles. One rate-of-change line answers the question at one speed. The KST asks it at four speeds at once and lets the slow answer carry the most weight.

That design solves an old problem. A fast momentum reading turns early but cries wolf; a slow one is trustworthy but late. Technical analyst Martin Pring built the KST to sit between them, and he laid out the formula in his 1993 book Martin Pring on Market Momentum. The weighting is the quiet decision that shapes everything. Because the slowest reading counts four times as much as the fastest, the KST leans toward the steady view while still letting the quicker readings nudge it into an earlier turn. How do you read a KST signal?

The main trigger is the crossover: the KST line crossing above its signal line reads as strengthening upward momentum, and a cross below reads as the reverse. The signal line is just a short moving average of the KST itself, so a cross means the line has pulled away from its own recent average. That is the read most traders act on.

Two supporting signals sit around it. The zero-line cross tells you which side of neutral momentum sits on, and a KST holding well above zero says the up-momentum has room, not that you should chase it. Divergence is the more interesting one: when price posts a higher high but the KST posts a lower one, the move is being made on fading momentum, and that gap often shows up before price turns. What are the standard KST settings, and should you touch them?

Pring’s published daily defaults use four rate-of-change lookbacks โ€” commonly 10, 15, 20 and 30 โ€” each smoothed, then weighted 1, 2, 3 and 4 so the longest reading dominates. A nine-period average of the resulting line is the usual signal line. He also defined separate short-term, intermediate and long-term KSTs for different horizons, with the longer versions using much longer lookbacks.

The honest guidance is to leave the defaults alone until you have a reason not to. The weighting scheme is the part that makes the KST what it is, and traders who “optimise” it on past data usually end up with a line that fit last year and fits nothing since. Change the timeframe you apply it to before you change the numbers inside it. Does the KST indicator repaint?

A correctly built KST does not repaint. Every rate-of-change value and every smoothing average is drawn from completed candles, so once a candle closes, its KST reading is fixed and the historical line stops moving.

The value on the current, still-forming candle will shift until that candle closes, and that is expected โ€” not repainting. What you check for is an old crossover quietly relocating to a different candle after you reload the chart.
